starting to laid out more, and when we got the final prognosis it was only a few weeks we had and he entrusted it to me to it finish for him. the last thing he said to me about it, don t publish it if it s not worthy. i took that to heart in a way that s more important to me than anything. he chose most of the pieces , but you chose some too. he had put together the majority of the pieces that are in the book now, but i also read through, quite literally, everything he ever wrote and also speeches, transcripts, interviews and found some very important pieces that filled in some profound areas that needed to be in this last book. and this is like a puzzle you re putting in and moving pieces around.
it felt a little bit like a rubiks cube. i was trying to get all the right colors in the right places but each time you move one, another piece moves. because the book is so expansive and covers summary topics, everything from baseball, chess, politics, life and fatherhood, it all needed to have an underlying tissue and core that ran through the whole thing. daniel explains that core in his introduction to the point of it all. so what is the point of it all? of life, our existence on this planet, our membership in the vast complexity of humanity, politics should not say, keeping politics out of it was the point of my father s life s work. individuals must define their own meaning. he obviously didn t want to be defined by disability at all. he didn t want to talk about it, we didn t want to shoot it in a way that it even appeared on television. in fact, there were many people who watched fox who never knew that he was in a wheelchair. you are hesitant to include anything that f
anything or anyone take advantage of us. i m the one making the calls and i love him for that protection, but i would rather celebrate him then be sheltered myself. but when you see him steering me through that, what do you think. it so interesting to me because he says he s not a touchy healy guy. on one hand it s true, he s the most awry funny guy and he doesn t get mushy on the outside about anything, but i think at its core he was all heart and i think everyone who knows him, knows that and that s why people were so drawn to him. one of his favorite movies was
enjoyed imparting all that to me. he was also insistent that i learned how to ski. we went on ski vacations all the time when i was growing up. he would have the hot chocolate at the bottom of the hill but be watching and make sure i was learning all the right moves and he wanted me to it ski elegantly, not just recklessly. for someone with your level of paralysis, you are able to do a lot. your car isn t an awful lot vehicle. usually when people ride with me, the first 20 minutes is sheer terror. they just can t believe this thing is gonna work and it s gonna go where i intended to go. it also has the ejection seat. that s what that red one is.
