News this is ellison barber tonight we re inside this parking garage, now a field hospital were you expecting to need something like this summer? no. one of two just opened at the university of mississippi medical center this one is funded and staffed by samaritan s purse. 32 beds, all of them for covid patients in need of critical care. you think they ll be full by the end of the evening? probably not all of them by the end of the evening because it takes time to accept every one of them. but, you know, by the end of the week. reporter: and steps away, new fears that the state s only children s hospital, 28 kids are currently hospitalized, 8 in the icu. we re seeing kids who are more ill frequently with severe covid, even children who have not had previous underlying illnesses. reporter: donovan evans is 11 years old. he has covid-19, and on monday he was admitted to children s of mississippi next month he ll be old enough september the 26th will be his birthday ....
Secondary rare inflammatory syndrome, m.i.s.c. we spoke to the parents of a child who is in the hospital right now because of covid-19. he is 11 years old. his name is donovan evans. he s asthmatic. his parents said they kept him home most of the summer because they were worried about the numbers they see here, the rise in covid cases and the low rate of vaccination. next month they were planning to get him vaccinated as soon as he turned 12. he went back to school the other week, they say he wore a mask, for other students and teachers masks were optional and they believe he caught covid-19 on the school bus or classroom. next month he would have been old enough, september 22nd. the school failed us. we spoke with the principal and he act like he had no clue and my son come home crying and ....
They have a children s hospital just down the road here. this is the only children s hospital in the state of mississippi. 23 children were hospitalized here with covid-19 as of yesterday. kids makeup higher percentage of hospitalized covid population than ever before. one of those children is an 11-year-old, donovan evans. i spoke to his parents yesterday evening. he again is 11. that means he is not eligible to get vaccinated. his parents planned to get him vaccinated as soon as he turned 12. he wore a mask at school, they kept him home most of the summer because he has asthma. sent him to school a couple weeks ago. he wore a mask, but at his school like most in the state, masks were optional, others were not wearing them. his parents believe he contracted covid-19 at school or on the school bus. he was admitted at the hospital here on monday. listen to what his parents told ....
