Around 300 walked the streets of downtown Saskatoon Tuesday, bringing awareness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission s Calls to Action. (Brady Lang/650 CKOM)
Saskatoon Tribal Chief Mark Arcand stood before the media Tuesday, minutes prior to the start of a walk for reconciliation.
Wearing flip-flops, Arcand was preparing to make a 23-block trek across downtown Saskatoon.
When asked about his choice of footwear, Arcand didn’t beat around the bush.
“Think about how much our residential school survivors suffered,” he said. “For me just to get blisters and for me just to walk in flip flops is a small gesture for what they went through.” ....

Some signs from the STC s awareness walk Tuesday as over a hundred joined the march through downtown Saskatoon.
Downtown Saskatoon was a sea of orange Tuesday to raise awareness around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action.
The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) led over 100 people through downtown. Tribal Chief Mark Arcand said more people have been willing to listen since the discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools in the province.
Still, he said systems need to change, including child and family services and education in the Prairies. ....
