Even when the elevators are working im not sure that it is worth the long wait to go up and peer through little tiny portholes for a view thats probably better from down here. Even before the earthquake 5 years ago that sent people scurrying down the stairs from the top of the monument the elevator was notoriously mental. David rubenstein donated 7. 5 million to repair it after the earthquake. Now he will give another 3 million to fix the elevator. I do it because i think that im giving back to my country in a small modest way and hope ill inspire other people to do the same. Its closed. Its going to take a while to get it working right. Until Cherry Blossom season in 2019 probably. To have the elevators fixed. They will add new tv screens to the elevator and add new cables.
