Bids for Kingsford Public Safety building work approved | News, Sports, Jobs

KINGSFORD The Kingsford City Council has approved bids for work to make the Kingsford Public Safety building more accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The council accepted:
A $9,650 bid from St. George Glass of Iron Mountain to replace the front entrance door; $18,000 had been budgeted.
A $24,000 bid from Universal Plumbing in Iron Mountain to update a bathroom. The budget had $23,000 for the bathroom, but City Manager Mike Stelmaszek said the project has been in the capital plan for several years.
Council members pointed out the city still would save money on the overall project. Only one bid was submitted for each contract. ....

IRON MOUNTAIN Carol Bronzyk has been tapped as the next Dickinson County clerk and register of deeds.
She succeeds Dolly Cook, who retired Sunday after 31 years in office. Bronzyk was administered the oath of office Monday.
Bronzyk was selected by the two Circuit Court judges, Mary Barglind and Christopher Ninomiya, as outlined by state law from among many qualified applicants, according to a news release.
Bronzyk has been Dickinson County’s deputy clerk and circuit court clerk for the past 18 years after two years as a sheriff’s department dispatcher. ....

BTB passes resolution to honor Cook | News, Sports, Jobs

QUINNESEC The Breitung Township Board passed Monday a resolution honoring Dickinson County Clerk-Register of Deeds Dolly Cook.
Cook, who has served more than three decades in the position, announced in early February her intent to retire effective Feb. 28.
“I think it would only be fitting that the township do a resolution wishing her well and thanking her for years of service to all the citizens of Dickinson County,” Board Supervisor Denny Olson said.
The resolution passed unanimously.
In other business, the board:
Extended poverty exemptions for property taxes. Those exempt from tax collection in 2019-2020 will remain exempt in tax years 2021-2023 without reapplying, provided there has not been a change in ownership or occupancy status. ....

IRON MOUNTAIN Dickinson County adopted a resolution Monday protesting “undue burdens” placed on businesses as a result of Michigan’s pandemic restrictions.
The board debated the topic during a Zoom meeting that featured a weak audio feed for some participants. The resolution was a late addition to the agenda and no copy was provided to The Daily News before the meeting or within hours after adjournment.
The action appears similar to a measure approved earlier this month in Delta County, declaring it a sanctuary county for businesses affected by COVID-19 shutdowns.
Likewise, the Dickinson board said it would not single out or harm any business owner that opens an establishment while taking responsible precautions. ....
