Understanding how they pass on racial bias to even young children. back in 2010 before the black lives matter movement and deaths of george floyd and eric gardner and trayvon martin and so many others who were known, we began to study the effects of racial bias on kids, working with a renowned child psychologist, we recreated and updated the famous doll test from the 1940s that used black and white dolls to ask kids about differences in race. instead of using dolls, the folks used the identical drawings of children with different shades of skin color and asked questions like can you show me the smart child, the mean child, the child who has the skin color that most adults like. it shows that children as young as 5 years old were already internalizing and mirroring subtle messages about race they were getting from their friends and from their families and the world at large. take a look. reporter: 5-year-old brielle was part of our study in 2010. ....

The fingerprint that makes every holiday shopping season unique is how every year has that one in-demand item that gets people to wrestle each other in store aisles, or wait for hours in virtual queues, just for a shot at buying it. In the 1990s, it was an animatronic Elmo doll that laughed when it was tickled. A few years ago, it was a collection of toy hamsters called Zhu Zhu Pets. This year, it’s the futuristic PlayStation 5 gaming console. ....

Kingston task force finds police information lacking for reform effort

“It’s exactly why we’re doing this work tonight,” he said. “This town hall (meeting) tonight is a work in progress. We should have said that at the very outset, that this is where we are in the work and (community) feedback tonight is informing that work.” ....

To launch the first exhibition, the Fergersons reached out to artists who were part of Los Angeles assemblage movement. The couple told the artists, Make a doll and reinterpret the notion of dolls, reinterpret our identity, and let s do this show, according to Motevalli. And it was mostly artwork. It was mostly assemblage art, and some Black dolls that were historic.
That first exhibition attracted people interested in doll-collecting, artwork, dolls used for religious purposes and the psychological impact of dolls on the public. It was a big hit, said Motevalli. Because of its success, the Friends of the William Grant Still Arts Center decided to continue the show year after year, bringing dollmakers of all kinds together in the same venue.  ....
