balances ever. of course, mr. chairman, you know you can t start paying down the $18 trillion of debt that we have with another $100 trillion on the other way until you first come to balance. we do that in a responsible hopb nest way. we do it in a responsible logical ten year window. dana: i was following all of that. that was in the obama administration. this budget the president is putting forward also doesn t balance. how have the economics changed your viewpoint on supporting this type of budget? well, hey, i think that s a great segment, a great question. here s the big difference. with the president s budget request is doing here is going after the real drivers of our debt. that s the mandatory spending. he s doing it in a very humane way. the obama budget that i was talking about before never touched medicare, snap. excuse me, medicade, tan and snap, other welfare programs. this one does. $1.7 trillion worth in the first ten years alone. that s a trade i ll take every
that s going on. and so we think about what s happening, house republicans who have called for years and years for a balanced budget that controls spending and gets the debt under control are on the verge of passing a budget that doesn t balance, that out of $47 trillion in spending, aspires to save $1 billion, and that adds to the national debt. it s a joke. it is a laugh line. and they re about to accept that which means they will be walking away from the mantle of fiscal responsibility. senator corker said we can look forward and look at tax reform and figure out how to make it pro-growth and don t exaggerate that growth and pass something that doesn t add to the debt. we need other members of congress who remembers those are the kinds of principles they aspire to run for offices because of, and actually call for fiscal responsibility and pro-growth tax reform instead of massively adding to the debt. i don t think senator corker will let something like this get
people see me as someone willing to stand up to leadership when leadership is wrong. i stood on the floor of the senate for 10 1/2 hours and filibustered against them collecting our phone records. i stood on the floor for 13 1/2 hours and said i think it s important that the president acknowledge that he s not going to kill u.s. citizens without any kind of due process, without a trial. so i think i am seen as someone who is willing to stand up on principle and stand against the tide. i ve never voted for any of the funding bills for any budget that doesn t balance. the former texas governor rick perry dropped out. he was running out of money. scott walker dropped out, the current governor of wisconsin. yesterday he was running out of money. how is your financial situation? how is your campaign doing as far as money is concerned? well, we re doing pretty well. we just won an important straw poll in michigan this last week. we re raising money, competing in all 50 straights. we ve
doesn t balance. but it doesn t invest in the future. you re with young people right now, programs with with stephen is talking about, yes, we code and sister code, all of that is the future and that unfortunately is not the future reflected in the republican budget. let s talk about one of the other big issues that has effected detroit since the economic collapse and hitting hard among homeowners. you were an author of the tax act in 2007 and you are seeking to extend it through 2017. let s talk about the ideas in it. you have 24% of metro homes under water and 47% in default and headed to foreclosure and 50% of low-end detroit homes are in a negative equity right now. right. what do you think should be done about that and what would you like to do about it? well first of all, things are getting better. there are a number of
well, i thought it very intriguing in that the budget really lays out kind of a shocking attack on seniors, if you will. we haven t seen all the detail yet, we ll look at it, but i ll tell you when you re going after seniors the way he s already done on obama care, taken $700 billion out of medicare to put into obama care and now coming back at seniors again, i think you re crossing that line very quickly here in terms of denying access to seniors for health care in districts like mine certainly and around the country. i think he s going to have a lot of pushback from some of the major senior organizations on this and republicans, as well. and this is a budget that doesn t balance. at the end of the day, you can have all the flowery rhetoric, but i m a numbers guy and this doesn t add up. it does not balance. we ve passed the ryan budget. it does balance in ten years, it will put us on a path to grow the economy and jobs and, again, gets us to where we have a balanced budget. 65 days
