Montenegro s Limited Coalition Hammers Away At Perilous Religion, Nationality Issues May 07, 2021 13:14 GMT Share share Print PODGORICA Still rutted with historically fraught questions of religious and national identity, Montenegro s political path took a sharp turn in August. That s when a diverse coalition of Serbian nationalists, populists, centrists, socialists, environmentalists, and anticorruption campaigners won just enough votes to edge out the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) that had run the former Yugoslav republic for 30 years. A record turnout among Montenegro s some 540,000 registered voters demanded change and heralded impatience with President Milo Djukanovic and the perceived clientelism that helped make him one of Europe s longest-serving democratic leaders.

Montenegro – Meeting between Clément Beaune and Djordje Radulovic (Paris, 21 Apr 2021)

Clément Beaune, Minister of State for European Affairs, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, received Djordje Radulovic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, on April 21. They discussed the context of the health and economic situation in Montenegro and the EU assistance provided to the country to address it, including through the forthcoming implementation of the European assistance mechanisms to ensure access to vaccines by Balkan countries. The minister of state reaffirmed France’s support for Montenegro’s European prospects, as well as our position concerning the EU accession process, based on the new enlargement methodology, which Montenegro accepted. Clément Beaune expressed France’s support for the priority accorded by Montenegro to rule of law reforms. He also underscored our attachment to the stability of the Western Balkans region.
