MUMBAI: The cultural capital of Maharashtra has become the epicentre of Covid-19 in the state. Of the 6.20 lakh active cases in Maharashtra, 1.12 lakh are reported from Pune alone.
According to the Maharashtra government’s health department data, 36,39,855 have tested positive in the state till date. Of this, 6,89,274 are from Pune. Of them, 5,67,602 patients have recovered, while 8,695 died. ....

The clock is ticking on India s Covid-19 vaccination drive. The world s second-most populous nation has to inoculate 35 crore citizens in the shortest possible time after it threw open jabs to everyone above 45 years. The race against time gets more testing due to the hurdles ahead, and some that persist from the previous phases.
First, vaccinators are short-handed, which compounds the poor healthcare infrastructure. Second, the private sector is dragging its feet, posing a big challenge to scaling up operations. The lack of engagement with people from the lower socio-economic background isn t helping the already slow exercise.
Over and above all these obstacles, vaccine hesitancy continues even among the urban and educated. Nearly 80 days after rolling out the Covid-19 vaccination, India has vaccinated less than one crore individuals with the required two doses to protect them from the rampaging pandemic. ....

The Pune authorities have imposed a 12-hour night curfew in the city starting Saturday. The night curfew in Pune will start at 6 pm and continue till 6 am and the coronavirus situation will be monitored till next Friday for further steps.
Pune district in Maharashtra reported 8,011 new coronavirus cases and 65 deaths on Thursday while the
Pune Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao announced on Friday, “A 12-hour night curfew from 6 pm to 6 am in Pune from tomorrow. The situation will be reviewed next Friday.”
Pune has also ordered bars, hotels and restaurants to remain closed for 7 days and only home deliveries will be allowed. No public function, except funerals and weddings will be allowed in Pune in this 7-day period. ....
