warnings from an expert straight ahead this hour. but i want to start now with cnn s supreme court analyst steve ladek and global affairs analyst susan glass here to talk about what is going on with breyer s official retirement has not happened but that s the word that it s going to happen soon. good evening to both of you. susan, president biden gets a supreme court pick, a chance to turn a new page in his presidency, a way to shore up the base and fulfill a big campaign promise. but still, it probably won t be an easy road, will it? in these divided times that we re living in right now. you know, nothing is easy, don, anymore in our politics. i mean, for president biden it s really full circle. as the chairman of the judiciary committee he was around three decades ago helping to preside over the confirmation hearings of justice breyer. now he ll get to pick his replacement. i m struck by the initial tone from conservatives which has not been fire-breathing, you know ....
majority whip james clyburn, who also paved the way making sure then-candidate biden made this commitment. we talked about the supreme court. i am looking forward to making sure there is a black woman on the supreme court, to make sure we in fact get [ applause ] i commit if i am elected president, have an opportunity to appoint someone to the courts, it will be i will appoint the first black woman to the courts. it s required that they have representation now. it s long overdue. we are putting together a list of, a group of african-american women who are qualified and have the experience to be in the court. i am not going to release that until we go further down the line of vetting them as well. well, there are plenty of highly-qualified candidates, some of whom already vetted and we will talk about them tonight. we will speak with valerie jaret, as well. we will talk about the process of getting any nominee confirmed which as you know has produced memorable ....

and she has a long and very stellar academic trail, having graduated from harvard and harvard law school. then clerked on the supreme court. then was in private practice for a few years and then as i said became a maybe i didn t say, became a public defender. which is very important because biden has stressed that he wants to have a diversity, not just of demographics but of experience. and she represented indigent defendants accused of crimes, several of the members of the court are former prosecutors, but i don t think there has been anybody that has represented people that were accused of crimes since thurgood marshall and that s a long time ago. he was the first african american justice on the supreme court. so the other leading contender is leondra kruger. and she is a justice on the california supreme court. like ketanji brown jackson, she has stellar legal credentials. interestingly, she was hired by the republican solicitor general of the united states to be a ....
drama. we re going to have more on that in a moment. the president s standing by his campaign pledge to nominate the first black woman to the court. the question remains, however, who will that person be? and will the process be completed before the midterm elections. we are also following some breaking news on the economy. thankfully some good news. in the last year the u.s. economy grew at the fastest rate since 1984. this according to a new report out this morning, we re going to have much more on that coming up. but first cnn justice correspondent jessica schneider and white house correspondent jeremy diamond are standing by with more on the news about justice brierbreyer stepping down. how do we expect this to play out timing-wise? we re still waiting to hear from justice breyer directly or potentially a statement from the supreme court. we re expecting maybe that will come later this morning, early afternoon. but a source has told kaitlan collins that ....
