The MAK Showcases the Long-Overlooked Women of the Wiener Werkstätte


Men—namely Josef Hoffmann, Dagobert Peche, and Koloman Moser—ruled at the Wiener Werkstätte, the powerfully influential but short-lived Viennese design firm in operation from 1903 to 1932. But scores of women were integral, too, though only scholars and dealers seem to know much about them today. “We want to change that and draw attention to the talents that we could find through our research,” says Anne-Katrin Rossberg, curator of “Women Artists of the Wiener Werkstätte,” now on view at Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts (MAK). 
That means a sorority that’s at least 181 strong, from Vally Wieselthier (ceramics) and Mathilde Flögl (textiles, fashion) to Helene Gabler (painted glass), Eilfriede Berbalk (silver), and Klara Posnanski (fabrics). “The women created sensational fabric and tapestry designs, enamels, modern graphic designs, and leatherware, as well as their very own ceramic styles, from folkloristic to very modern, ....
