LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - State District Judge Ruben Reyes was known nationwide for his work with specialty courts, working to provide solutions for addicts in the legal system, instead of just putting them in jail. On Thursday, a group of people helped by Judge Reyes gathered to remember him.
Those who attended the ceremony on Thursday night described Judge Reyes as a man who changed their lives.
“I immediately wanted to do so much for him because I know that he would. He does a lot for us, and he did a lot for us,” said Jason Gutierrez.
He died from COVID-19 complications last weekend.Â
Family and colleagues remember him as a kind, tough and fair man and jurist.Â
He presided over Lubbock s Adult Drug Speciality Court and advocated to help addicts.Â

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - State District Judge Ruben Reyes passed away this weekend due to COVID-19 complications at the age of 56.
Two attorneys who worked with him at the Law Office of Hurley and Guinn said his family roots paved the way for his success and passion in the courtroom.
Ruben Reyes got his outstanding work ethic from his family life in East Lubbock. From Dunbar high school he went to Yale then Baylor Law.
“He blazed a path for other people but never forgot to look back. Never got that he was beyond that station. That he could be real with people just like him,” David Guinn said.
