Prime Minister Modi has described the just completed third tier local body elections to the District Development Councils (DDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as realisation of Mahatama Gandhi’s vision of “Gram Swaraj”. However, they are hardly likely to satisfy local Kashmiri aspirations for the restoration of basic democratic freedoms or dampen international criticism. ....

BJP got more votes than 'Gupkar Gang' in J&K DDC elections: Anurag Thakur


JAMMU: After BJP emerged as the single largest party in first-ever elections to District Development Councils (DDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir, Anurag Thakur, BJP’s in-charge of the polls in the Union Territory on Wednesday claimed that his party got more votes than the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD).
“It is important to know that independent candidates have polled more votes than the Congress and the PDP. The same Mehbooba Mufti who had refused to unfurl the Tricolour has got a befitting reply today,” Thakur said in a press conference in Jammu.
“The trust which the J-K people have put in Modiji, the support which they have shown in his policies and to his work to strengthen the democratic principles, are the reasons why BJP has got three seats in the Kashmir Valley,” he added. ....

J&K DDC polls: Gupkar alliance wins big; BJP emerges single-largest party
Independent candidates have won 50, Congress 26, Apni Party 12, PDF and the National Panthers Party two each and the BSP one.

The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) have swept the
first-ever District Development Council (DDC) pollsheld in Jammu and Kashmir after the state lost its special status to abrogation of Article 370. The Farooq Abdullah-led seven-party coalition, which comprises Abdullah’s National Conference (NC), and Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has won 110 seats. The BJP has, meanwhile, bagged 75 seats after securing the largest vote share in the polls, the results of which were declared Wednesday. ....
