This is not quite a review and not a traditional advance to something the Milwaukee Opera Theatre is attempting this week, more an alert to the community about an online hybrid that is not traditional musical theater or even an occasion easily described as theater.

Jill Anna Ponasik is promoting (Urban Milwaukee reviewed the first) as a brief online hybrid, an alternate theater piece for paying customers ($22) that only exists because of the pandemic and falls somewhere between a theater event and a music video.

Milwaukee Opera Theatre is presenting what they call a Zoiree (Zoom performance + Soiree), clever, right? Their upcoming Zoiree (Feb 19-21, Feb 26-28) is the 2nd part of their Distance Commissions (2 brand new music theater pieces inspired by the idea of distance, designed to be composed, produced, and performed remotely). This month the Zoiree is THE SOUND by SistaStrings!

What is a Zoom Zoirèe? We’re so glad you asked! It’s a word we just made up for a soirèe (a gathering typically held in a private home) that occurs over Zoom, allowing theater fans to consume a story while remaining safe during a global pandemic.
