New Delhi:
Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs. It is an acute respiratory infection where the air sacks in the lung are filled with fluid instead of air, which makes breathing difficult.
Caused by infection with bacteria and viruses, pneumonia can affect any age group. But the most vulnerable are children under the age of five.
Around 2,500 children die due to pneumonia every day across the world. Pneumonia claimed the lives of more than nine lakh under-5 children across the world in 2015. Of these deaths, about 1.8 lakh occurred in India. ....

Two warnings ignored? Who is culpable? No less than a forum of scientific advisers set up by the government in early March 2021 itself and a special task force as early January 2021 warned Indian officials of a new and more contagious variant of the coronavirus taking hold in the country. Five scientists who are part of the forum have told this to Reuters and a researcher to the Telegraph last week. Besides sero-surveys in various states had also warned of the second tsunami that is upon us (Indian Express). ....

Centre failed to anticipate second Covid wave despite warning signals: Researcher

The Centre failed to anticipate the second Covid-19 wave despite warning signals and omitted to take steps that could have mitigated the devastation, a top government researcher has said, agreeing with other experts that India is paying the price for complacency.
The health researcher, a member of the Centre’s national task force on Covid-19, said the surge and the nationwide bed and oxygen shortages had resulted from a complacency that ignored data from India and elsewhere suggesting “a big wave” was possible.
“It is frustrating and it is sad what’s going on cannot be just abruptly stopped,” the researcher, who requested not to be named, told ....

How we landed in Covid vaccine mess - Telegraph India

India’s shortage of Covid-19 vaccines that precludes immediate inoculation for all adults is rooted in the Narendra Modi government’s lack of funding for key vaccines under development and evaluation, experts have said.
The experts, who have tracked global vaccine efforts, said the Indian government’s lack of investments contrasted with the actions of many countries, including America and Britain, that provided advance funding to vaccine makers and signed purchase pacts with them.
The Centre had last November announced a Rs 900-crore project, coordinated by the Union science ministry’s department of biotechnology, for Covid-19 vaccines.
But none of this money went to either Covishield, the AstraZeneca vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India at Pune, or Covaxin, the home-grown vaccine made by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech. Instead, a part of it was given to candidate vaccines that were at more nascent stages of development. ....
