Frontiers | Racism as Public Health Crisis: Assessment and Review of Municipal Declarations and Resolutions Across the United States

Racism in the United States has been cited as a key driver of racial health inequities. Racism as a public health crisis has been in the forefront, particularly with respect to state and municipal governments that have developed legislation, resolutions and declarations. This policy brief includes a review of resolutions and declarations across the US related to Racism as a Public Health Crisis through September 2020. There were 125 resolutions reviewed for content related to the history of racism, reference to racial health equity data, solutions and action steps, implementation and any accompanying funding or resources. We found that the majority of policies name racism as critical in addressing racial inequities in health with limited details about specific actions, funding or resources. ....

Kia Croom, an Oakland native now in Washington, D.C., works hard to ensure that corporate dollars get funneled into Black communities and organizations. Since the 2020 height of the Black Lives Matter movement, hundreds of multi-national corporations have verbally aligned themselves with Black lives â but is their money where their mouth is? Kiaâs challenge to all companies is for permanent philanthropic giving to Black communities to address centuries of structural racism.

Last summer several American corporations made public statements condemning George Floydâs murder, affirming that Black Lives Matter and pledging $50 billion in support of Black communities, according to a study from Creative Investment Research. However, since then, just $250 million has been committed or allocated, according to the firmsâ analysis. ....

2020 commitment: Airbnb said it would donate a total of $500,000 to the NAACP and the Black Lives Matter Foundation. It also said it would match employee donations to both groups.
The company also said that by the end of 2021, 20% of its board of directors and executive team collectively would be made up of people of color. By the end of 2025, Airbnb said, its goal is to have 20% of U.S. employees be underrepresented minorities and for 50% of global employees who identify in the gender binary to be women.
Airbnb also said each member of its executive team would create and share a detailed plan to meet those goals with their teams. ....
