A recent newspaper report says some medical practitioners call for a blanket ban to be placed on traditional birth attendants in Nigeria. The complaint is that the condition at traditional birth centres doesn’t meet modern standards. After a former health commissioner in Ondo State listed the facilities which he said traditional birth centres didn’t have, he said of the attendants, “Forget their stories, they have no success stories.”  We know that not all citizens who use TBAs would agree with his submission. We also know that this mentality of simply dismissing a system that once served our people in the pre-colonial days isn’t always beneficial. At least, sensible nations know this. ....
