The primary runway at the Portland International Jetport has reopened after a nearly two-day planned shutdown.
The east-west Runway 11/29 closed at 8 a.m. Tuesday so that crews could make safety upgrades. That includes new in-pavement lighting and painting. The shutdown was planned until 5 a.m. Thursday, but the runway reopened Wednesday night, ahead of schedule.Sign up for our Newsletters
The work forced all air traffic to use the Jetport s secondary north-south runway, sending planes over several communities not used to that volume. Jetport officials said many people complained about the noise. Airport Director Paul Bradbury said it was good that the work was able to be done before May 27, when the number of flights at the Jetport will increase significantly. ....

Mother Nature is expected to deliver an unwelcome present on Christmas Day, a powerful wind and rain storm that forecasters say could cause flooding and widespread power outages.
“The primary hazards will be strong winds potentially over 50 mph, heavy rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, areas of dense fog and coastal splash over,” the National Weather Service office in Gray warned in a Tuesday evening tweet. “Power outages are likely where winds gust over 50 mph, especially along the coast. In addition, minor to moderate stream and river flooding will be possible due to the combination of snow melt, warm temperatures, and heavy rainfall.” ....
