PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) In a sure sign that summer is almost here, Rhode Island is opening some of its state beaches this weekend.
Scarborough North and Roger Wheeler state beaches both in Narragansett will be open weekends only, weather permitting, starting Saturday until Memorial Day, according to a statement from the state Department of Environmental Management.
All state beaches will officially be open daily starting May 29 and lasting until Labor Day.
“Accessibility to outdoor recreation venues where families and friends can relax and share special times is part of DEM’s mission,” department Director Janet Coit said in a statement. “After the year we’ve all had, we’re glad to open two popular state beaches early so that Rhode Islanders can get outside and enjoy themselves when crowds are light. ....

Annual Rhode Island Quahog Week May 17-23 | Outdoor News Daily

Annual Rhode Island Quahog Week May 17-23
PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Seafood Marketing Collaborative, chaired by Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Director Janet Coit, announces that the 5th annual Quahog Week returns this year from May 17 to May 23. The week-long celebration shines a light on Rhode Island’s favorite local clam, the hard-working men and women who harvest them, and the vibrant local food industry that makes them available to consumers.

Demand tends to peak during the summer months, when stuffies and clam cakes serve as main attractions for shore-goers and tourists. Targeting the spring shoulder season for Quahog Week helps to increase consumer awareness, demand, sales and market opportunities for quahogs during a time of year when the fresh product is readily available, but often overlooked. ....

The Ocean State's electricity rates are among the highest in the lower 48 states.

By Doug Gablinske
Rhode Island consistently ranks as one of the most energy-expensive states in the country. At over 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, the Ocean State’s electricity rates are among the highest in the lower 48 states.
Yet, instead of investing in cleaner and more efficient energy infrastructure, previously elected officials in the state instead decided to pursue dubious climate action lawsuits against the very energy companies the state needs to keep its lights on and economy moving. As a lifelong Rhode Islander who cares about our environment and our state’s energy future, my frustrations with the climate action lawsuits remain. They are ultimately counterproductive to the goal of achieving lower greenhouse gas emissions and cleaner air.  ....
