Jobless rate climbs to a seven-month high

The unemployment rate last month gained 0.06 percentage points to 3.68 percent, the highest in seven months, as people lost jobs to business downsizing or closures induced by a COVID-19 outbreak, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said yesterday.
The statistics agency expects the job market to deteriorate further this month with the arrival of the graduation season and as the outbreak has yet to stabilize.

Inflation eating into take-home pay

Heightening inflationary pressures have pushed take-home pay into negative territory for the first time in six years, despite pay raises, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday.
The average monthly take-home wage in April gained 2.7 percent from a year earlier to NT$44,353 (US$1,499), while total wages including overtime and performance-based compensation grew 2.66 percent to NT$51,492, the DGBAS said.
The wage gains were the result of general pay increases in the public and private sectors, reflecting their improved earnings abilities, it said.

Jobless numbers up as resignations rise

The nation’s unemployment rate last month rose slightly to 3.66 percent, as workers left their jobs and took longer than usual to find new positions, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday.
The latest jobless reading suggested a fractional increase of 0.01 percentage points from one month earlier, driven mainly by resignations that often occur after the Lunar New Year holiday, DGBAS Deputy Director Chen Hui-hsin (陳惠欣) said.
The unemployment rate after seasonal adjustment rose 0.03 percentage points to 3.7 percent, affirming a stable job market, the agency’s monthly report showed.
