The conservation of migratory birds is a collective endeavour, and it is important to recognise the intricate link between migratory bird species and the well-being of the people.
This was shared in a statement by ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) Executive Director Dr Theresa Mundita S Lim in conjunction with this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, which took place on May 8.
“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact many countries, slowing down economies and grounding social activities, including work and leisure,” said the executive director. “The anthropause, or the slowing down of human activities at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has afforded us time to reflect on the innate link between human and nature.” ....

Borneo Rainforest Shelters Bird Lost 172 Years Ago

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, March 5, 2021 (ENS) – Muhammad Suranto and Muhammad Rizky Fauzan, who both live in Indonesia’s South Kalimantan province, were gathering forest products in an area near their homes when they stumbled upon an unfamiliar bird species. They caught and released the bird after taking some photographs.
The friends contacted Indonesian birdwatching groups BW Galeatus and Birdpacker, who suspected the bird might be the Black-browed Babbler,
Malacocincla perspicillata, believed to be extinct for more than 170 years. After consultations with expert ornithologists from Indonesia and around the region, their hunch was confirmed.

New study: at least 180 migratory land bird species trapped across Asia
The latest research sheds new light on the plight of land birds that migrate across Asia, revealing that at least 180 species are being trapped for food, the caged bird trade and other uses – often illegally. This, together with hunting and habitat destruction, is driving widespread declines.
