Convention Center Expansion Ballot Measure Announced |

an Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has asked the City Council to place a proposed hotel room tax increase on the November ballot to fund expansion of the Convention Center, repair local streets, and deal with homelessness in the City.
Mayor Faulconer’s proposal outlines a staggered hotel tax increase that would add 1% to all hotel rooms in the City of San Diego, an additional 1% to hotels between SR56 and SR54, and another 1% for all hotels within downtown. The proposed tax increases would in place for up to 40 years.
“The Mayor is proposing a ballot measure to increase the lodging revenue that the City collects from tourists to fund the expansion through voter approved debt, and is proposing to leverage this opportunity to address two more of San Diego’s biggest issues – homelessness and repairing our roads,” states a report to the City Council issued by the Mayor last week. ....

Lawyers Suing City Ask that All Documents Be Released, Support Independent Investigation

Elliott has been criticized for not having reviewed the very lopsided deal that included language on its first page that completely shields the landlord from any liability for any known and unknown defects or problems. That language, which several real estate lawyers claim is not legal under state law, is the reason the City may be on the hook for more than $100 million in repairs needed to bring the building back to be operational, in addition to the $128 million in lease payments required by the agreement.
Attorney Cory Briggs, who is challenging Elliott in the upcoming election, charges that Elliott failed to properly review the agreement or alert the City Council to the potential liabilities before it was signed, and that Elliott did not attempt to address any problems with the deal for three years until this year when the building was unusable and the issues became public. ....

New Trade Deal with Mexico Included $300M for Tijuana River Valley |

The recently signed international trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada included funding to help address raw sewage spilling into San Diego’s waters from Mexico.
President Trump signed the new US Mexico Canada Agreement, called USMCA, on January 29, after nearly a year of negotiations between the three countries. The USMCA replaces NAFTA, passed in 1992, as the binding trade agreement between the three countries of North America.
Among the many international issues addressed in the agreement were environmental problems like the Mexican sewage flow across the border. For years, Mexico has allowed raw sewage to flow into the Tijuana River Valley along the border, and that sewage makes its way into the ocean in Imperial Beach. ....

SDSU Mission Valley Plan Approved by State System

San Diego State University’s proposal to buy SDCCU Stadium from the City for a new stadium, student housing, and commercial development was approved this week by the California State University system’s Board of Trustees.
The state system’s 25-member board approved the plan’s final environmental impact report along with a commitment of $350 million to purchase the land from the City, initial development costs, traffic improvements, and other costs, not including funding for the stadium. Approval for a new stadium is expected later this year, and would include an additional $300 million for construction. ....
