Senior Center gets sprucing up | News, Sports, Jobs

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Johnstown Senior Citizens Center recently received a sprucing up from the city Department of Public Works. Center Executive Director Diedrie Roemer, who is also associated with the local Lions Club, reported recently to the Common Council that she wanted to thank DPW, which got the facility “cleaned up this spring.” She thanked the DPW staff for also hanging flags on Main Street and “making our city a welcoming place.” “We are looking forward to the beautiful hanging flower baskets coming in May,” Roemer stated. “The Lions Club is accepting donations for the flowers, which can be mailed to P.O. Box 305, Johnstown, NY 12095.” She said any amount is “very much appreciated.”

Senior center to host COVID vaccine event | News, Sports, Jobs

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Johnstown Senior Citizens Center will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccination program in the future, the Common Council learned Monday night. Information about the COVID shots were included in the center’s report as part of the council meeting at City Hall. Center Executive Director Diedrie Roemer reported that Palmer’s Pharmacy in Johnstown is planning to conduct a COVID-19 Vaccination Program at the senior center “when the vaccine becomes available to them.” “I know that many of our members are anxious to get the COVID-19 vaccine and find it difficult to navigate the system for an appointment,” she said.

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The popular tax preparation services usually offered at the Johnstown Senior Citizens Center is in doubt this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In her report Tuesday to the Common Council, center Executive Director Diedrie Roemer indicated the facility has received “numerous calls” about AARP tax preparation services held there in the past. “Currently, AARP is unsure if they will have the service available this year and are recommending people have an alternative plan if they are going to file taxes this year,” Roemer said. “We may have further information in the next few weeks, but appointments would most likely not even be set up until March, according to AARP..”

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Johnstown Senior Citizens Center is open and coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, and has planned events to start the new year. In her monthly report Monday to the Common Council, center Executive Director Diedrie Roemer said the center “remains open for our members who want to come in and socialize or participate in one of our exercise classes.” Those classes include Chair Yoga, Yoga, Light Stretch, and Head to Toe. “The Painting Class welcomes you to join in and see how talented and creative you might be,” Roemer said. “The beautiful artwork done by our members is hanging in the dining room and is admired by everyone coming in.”
