WORLD / AFRICA By AFP Published: Mar 17, 2021 07:28 PM France has long defended the purity of its language with an official list of permitted words, but the launch of a new online dictionary with state support on Tuesday underlines how attitudes have shifted.
For three centuries, the venerable Academie Francaise in Paris has produced state-sanctioned dictionaries that document and approve new terms or expressions.
A general view of Paris Photo: VCGThe first version dates back to the 17th-century creation of the Academie, while work on its latest tome, the ninth, has been underway since 1986. The backers of the new dictionary, which include French President Emmanuel Macron, are lightning quick in comparison and hope to reach many more people with an online resource based on the Wikipedia model.

This week we are celebrating the French language, spoken by 300 million people – most under age 30 – on five continents, and the values it embodies: commitment to the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and equality between men and women. The year’s theme, selected by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), will be “Francophone women, resilient women.” The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs’ cooperation and cultural action network, the Instituts Français, and French educational establishments (attended by 370,000 students, including 126,000 French and 244,000 foreign students) have joined forces to stage a series of events throughout the week.
