this morning inside this apartment building in richmond hill. police say a three-week-old boy discovered dead in a courtyard here. neighbors aghast. oh, my god, that s horrible. that s terrible. reporter: police say it happened around 4 a.m. here on 115th street and myrtle avenue. the infant who lived with his family on the fourth floor of the building. there was blood everywhere. reporter: she heard a noise outside her window this morning, went to the courtyard and made the discovery. shaken, she called 911. they told me to go back in and do cpr. i can t, i m sorry. reporter: cops are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. police sources tell us that the infant was thrown from his fourth floor apartment window. i was just shocked. reporter: sources say the infant s father mohammed ahmed, his mother and two other adults and children were in the apartment when it happened. all were taken here to the 102 precinct for questioning. sent a chill u
into the bus company s safety record. reporter: a surveillance camera captured the school bus slamming into the liquor store on springfield avenue after colliding with an suv. the bus was coming down stanford avenue but the driver told witnesses and police the brakes failed before she could stop at the busy intersection. she was saying, oh, my god, my brakes went off on me. and that was it. and i thought, that s okay. it s going to be fine, you know,. reporter: this bodega owner was among all the people you can see here rushing to help the children, the smallest only 3. i tried to come back here. i grabbed a few bottles of water and tried to give it to the little kids because they were scared. even the ones that they were okay, they were scared. and they were crying. so i tried to help out. reporter: officials here say the 11 children, the bus driver, chaperone and suv driver were all alert and conscious with scrapes, bruises and broken bones. we take injuries to
the phone that he was giving up. there was a three-minute incounter i would say. they said they loved each other and at that point mr. tyree said he was going to surrender, his words, to come out. reporter: but just before noon six hours after the standoff began, he came out shooting. it appears given the way the man chose to die that what happened here may have been a matter of death by cop. steve langford, cbs 2 news. garland tyree has a long criminal history. according to investigators, he has 18 prior arrests and had been in and out of prison. he had been on probation since last summer. a newspaper clip he posted on instagram shows he was arrested in the 1990s for the shooting death of a neighborhood rival but was convicted on a lesser charge. and that firefighter injured in the shooting is recovering at richmond university medical center on staten island. that s where cbs 2 s christine sloan joins us live. christine. reporter: that s right. the lieutenant fir

information is urged to call police. we re live in south nyack, rocklin county, hazel sanchez, cbs 2 news. we also have some new information tonight about the family argument that police say ended in murder on long island. a grandmother is dead, allegedly at the hands of her own daughter, and today that daughter faced a judge. cbs 2 s carolyn gusoff reports from mineola. reporter: dawning a hospital gown, saying nothing, suzan grossman-kerner headed to court where holding her head and rocking, the 56-year-old faced charges of killing her mother with a kitchen knife. an argument ensued over the daughter s ongoing medical conditions. the daughter enraged, ultimate ly stabbed her mother to death. reporter: grossman-kerner summoned police to the home of her mother, urma grossman, midday monday. inside court documents reveal police found her covered in blood, administering aid to her dying mother. with stab wounds to her back and neck, the elderly grossman told police her
