fire season yet. cooler temperatures in san diego have helped crews there subdue the fires. sense last week, fire has consumed at least 26,000 acres. so far this year, cal fire responded to over 1500 wildfires, more than twice as many fires as average. the governor appeared on abc news today expressing his concern about the prolonged drought and wildfire activity. we ve got to gear up. we re going to deal with nature as best we can. but humanity is on a collision course with nature, and we re just going to have toe adapt to it in the best way we can. brown says the state has 5,000 firefighters and 600 million appropriated to battling wildfires. but he warns that may not be enough. he said thousands of additional firefighters could be needed in the future, saying california is on the front lines of climate change, which is making our weather hotter. coming up tonight at 6:00, we ll hear from a local fire captain ant specific conditions in the bay area. kimberly terry ....

good evening, i m diane dwyer. and i m terry mcsweeney. governor brown telling people to brace for the worst fire season ever. as people in san diego know, wild fire season is well-underway. first, let s go to kimberly terry. very strong words from the governor. very strong words. he didn t mince his words. it s going to be a tough summer. this is why. this is what has firefighters so concerned. dried out vegetation and, conditions, they say, they usually don t see until mid to late summer. drought and dry brush go hand-in-hand and could amount to a very busy fire season. well, we re in if third year of a very dry season. we re getting ready for the worst. we don t want to anticipate before we know. but we need a full complement of fire fighting capacity. the governor says right now, the state has 5,000 firefighters and $600 million to battle the blazes. fwu it might not be enough. so we ve got to gear up. we re going to deal with nature as best we can. ....

fire danger is high now, and it will likely get worse. we have team coverage. first, let s go to nbc bay area s kimberly terry in san jose for us. kimberly? reporter: diane, take a look around me. this is what has firefighters concerned. dry vegetation. mix in a little heat and wind, and you have a very bad combination. california governor jerry brown weighed in today on the situation here in the state, saying it s bracing for its toughest fire season yet. less wind and cooler temperatures this weekend have actually helped crews in san diego, though, largely subdue nearly a dozen fires there. since the middle of last week, fire there has consumed at least 26,000 acres. so far this year, cal fire has responded to over 1500 wildfires across the state. more than twice as many fires as average. san jose fire captain rob brown says they re watching conditions closely and are staffed and ready to go. it s not really as green as you think it is. i was just out in the hills ....

cleanup is underway. thank you for joining us, i m ama daetz. this was the 103rd running of the bay-to-breakers race. the city did make changes to the rules and route to contain the race s wilder participants. here s more. reporter: you know, extra police and a no-tolerance policy about alcohol helped keep bay-to-breakers a safer event. 24 people were arrested for being drunk in public, but this chain link fence around historic alamo square was a big success, it helped keep rowdy spectators out. dwight alexander is sweeping up the front of his house after 40,000 runners runners and ton f spectators left their mark. it was better this year, less pock intoxication, less urinating, but still it s a challenge. reporter: extra police along the route enforced the no-kole policy. many had their booze taken away and dumped out. a lot of dumping. at least the cops have been doing a good job, controlling. reporter: city crews went to work sweeping up a mountain of trash. th ....

drought, people getter isious. reporter: 25% reduction of water is what they mandated all of the residents and businesses to do. the new normal includes not hosing down hard surfaces like driveways, washing vehicles at car washes, using a cover for your pool, never watering the lawn more than 2 days a week and never on the 31st of the month. using little. reporter: giving people the option to conserve water does not work. there has to be penalties. save water. that is the only way that it can be done. you got to tell people to do it. one thing i am not sure of what are the penalties? reporter: they exist. fail to reduce it by 25% more than four times and the fine is your regular water bill plus $16 a unit and another $500 on top of that. the fines can be severe. still, the town seems on board but it is only the first month. you are not mad at the city officials for making a drastic choice? nope. no issues whatsoever. reporter: no watering grass while i ....
