NRI woman guilty of killing maid seeks amended charges and gag order


A 40-year-old woman, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to viciously abusing her domestic worker almost daily over nine months till she died in 2016, is seeking a further reduction of her charge to escape a potential life imprisonment sentence.
Gaiyathiri Murugaiyan will also be asking the court to impose a gag order prohibiting further reporting on the case, her new lawyer Joseph Chen said on Thursday (April 29).
Gaiyathiri admitted in February to fatally abusing 24-year-old Myanmarese Piang Ngaih Don.
Mr Chen who took over from Gaiyathiri’s previous lawyers, Mr Sunil Sudheesan and Ms Diana Ngiam, last month said that his client would not be retracting her guilty plea but is seeking to reduce her culpable homicide charge, currently under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, to one under Section 304(b)…….Read More ....

Indian-origin woman guilty of killing maid seeks amended charges and gag order


Singapore, April 29
An Indian-origin woman, who killed her 24-year-old domestic help from Myanmar after beating, burning and starving her, has hired a new lawyer and is seeking a reduced charge and a gag order in her case, according to a media report on Thursday.
Gaiyathiri Murugayan, 41, pleaded guilty in February to 28 charges, including culpable homicide, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by starvation, voluntarily causing hurt by a heated substance and wrongful restraint, the Channel News Asia reported. Another 87 charges will be considered in sentencing.
The prosecution had said then that it sought life imprisonment for Gaiyathiri’s acts.
Gaiyathiri was originally charged with murder following a recommendation by the Attorney-General, but this was brought down to culpable homicide due to the evidence that surfaced. ....

Jaime Teo fined $65,000 for failing to prevent Twelve Cupcakes from underpaying its staff


Seven of them - four customer service executives, two sales executives and a pastry chef - were underpaid between 2013 and 2016.
For instance, the pastry chef, who was supposed to receive a monthly salary of $2,300 in mid-2014, received $1,600 instead and continued receiving a lower salary until mid-2016.
The other six foreigners also received less than what they were supposed to.
Teo was represented by lawyers Sunil Sudheesan and Diana Ngiam.
In mitigation, her lawyers told the court their client had never played a decision-making role in the human resources aspect of the business when she was a director of Twelve Cupcakes. ....

Jaime Teo Chai-lin pleaded guilty on Feb 4 to 10 charges under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.

SINGAPORE - Artiste Jaime Teo Chai-lin, 43, was on Tuesday (March 9) fined $65,000 for failing to prevent Twelve Cupcakes - a home-grown confectionery chain which she co-founded - from underpaying its foreign workers.
The Singaporean, who is also a former model, pleaded guilty on Feb 4 to 10 charges under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
Fourteen other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
Teo, who founded the firm in 2011 with former radio DJ Daniel Ong Ming Yu, 45, her husband then, admitted that she had been neglectful. ....
