[applause] in december, 19 65, mary beth and john tinker, along with their friend christopher eckert to wore black armbands school to protest the war in vietnam. they were sent home and suspended from school. they were told they could not return until they agreed to end their protest. through their parents, the students sued the school for violating the right to free expression. therefore year court battle culminated in the landmark u.s. courtt u.s. supreme decision 50 years ago on fabry 24th, 1969. the court ruled 7-2 that students do not shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse door. since that time, mary beth and john have been a
