As part of the exercise, birdwatchers will observe and count the number of birds landing on the coast of the Gulf of Khambhat or taking off from this coast as well as those roosting in the coastal areas as part of their brief stopovers in Gujarat before continuing their migration onwards to China.

The vulture census conducted last year by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation, an autonomous body functioning under the forest department, had recorded 713 vultures, more than a third of the 2,143 vultures found across the state.
