good evening. i m raj mathai. this is the first full week of fall, and things are changing, not only here on earth but beyond. we ll get to that big nasa story in just a few minutes. plus a longtime music festival returning to golden gate park. but we begin in the east bay, specifically in alameda county. big trouble for the sheriff s department. 47 deputies have been stripped of their badges and moved to desk duty. this after an audit found that they had failed their pre-employment psychological evaluation. the issue was uncovered when the department recently audited all hires since 2016. it came after the arrest of deputy devin williams jr. you just saw his mug shot there, for the murders of a dublin couple. in a letter, the department told the 47 deputies they had received a d on their as peace officers. when asked why they re just now making the change, a spokesperson says california peace officer standards and training officials had previously told the department the
dublin. 47 alameda county sheriff s deputies now without law enforcement powers for failing psychological exams going back to 2016 ktvu has learned that deputies received unsatisfactory marks during their background checks and will now be stripped of their guns. the deputies have assignments that include monitoring inmates at santa rita jail in dublin to patrolling the streets from the eden township station in san leandro. essentially what you have is you have a sheriff s deputy who was a walking liability, and some might say a walking lawsuit as well. rights attorney at dante pointer says this is unprecedented, essentially have close to 50 members of law enforcement who are given a pass to carry a badge and a gun and they were not qualified. ktvu obtained a copy of the letter sent to deputies on friday. in the letter, sheriff greg ahern says his office believed they could still hire candidates who were deemed not suited for the job. the sheriff says the deputies can be fully
