768K deaths in PH in 2021 highest since post-World War II

Isolation facilty for Covid-19 patients (File photo) MANILA - Registered deaths across the Philippines stood at 768,504 from January to November last year, higher by 154,562 than the entire 2020. This number hiked the country's mortality rate to 6.98 per thousand, as against 5.8 per thousand in 2020, according to data released by the Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) on Tuesday, gathered from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The figures also set most the number of Filipinos dying in a year since after World War 2 in 1939 to 1945, according to PopCom. Ischemic heart disease was responsible for 110,332 deaths until October 2021, up from 86,164 the previous year. Covid-19 was another underlying cause of death for 75,285 Filipinos, higher than the 30,140 deaths from the same cause from March to December 2020. PopCom chief, Dr. Juan A. Adolescent mothers lower by 23.8K in 2020

(Photo courtesy ofPopCom/Benjie Espartero) MANILA - The Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) on Friday said the number of adolescents who gave birth in 2020 went down by 23,855. In 2019, births by mothers under 19 years old reached 180,915 anddroppedto 157,060 last year. A substantial part of the decrease was in the 15 to 19 age bracket, with the 23,557 mothers constituting 98.7 percent of the decline. The daily birth rate of the 15-19 group was at 425, lower than 2019's 489. Adolescent birth rates were at 31 per 1,000 girls in 2020, significantly lower than the 47 per 1,000 in the 2017 National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS), PopCom said, citing a Philippine Statistics Authority report. The Philippine Development Plan is aiming for a rate of 37 per 1,000, while PopCom targets a 50-percent reduction from the baseline of 57 percent in the 2013 NDHS to 28 percent by 2022.
