Student activist from a halfcentury ago are taking part in the milestone event at san jose state university. What they did at a Graduation Ceremony that changed the campus forever. Good evening. The point back in 1968 was a protest against an educational system they say worked against students of color. On the lasting effects of that bold moment. Reporter the last time this group of people Work Together they were making history. We believed at the time that we could change society. Reporter one of the student organizers of the 1968 student protest over the underrepresentation of mexican americans on the College Campuses and the overrepresentation of chicano agile teams in the vietnam war. The graduating seniors of 68 that were chicanos were less than 1 . Real inequity there. Conversely chicano over 22 . Reporter tensions grew a student demands for Committee Outreach chicano studies courses and more chicano faculty were ignored. It came to a head on graduation day. San jose police were
Works committee. Its about two hours. I call this hearing to order. Todays hearing is about the need for this committee to draft and to pass a bipartisan Highway Infrastructure bill. Both Ranking Member carpers staff and my staff have been working on drafting this legislation along with all of the members of this committee. We appreciate all the input we received from our home states, from our fellow members and from transportation stakeholders. Its our shared goal to advance a bill out of the committee this summer. That means the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will be first out of the gate to pass a Highway Infrastructure bill. This is appropriate given the history of bipartisan efforts to pass previous surface as far as surface transportation bills. Chef crumbling roads and bridges and they need to replaced.
