DETROIT, MI - The vaccine clinic at Ford Field was designed for Black Detroiters. This was the expressed goal of the federal site according to Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, chair of the COVID-19 Task Force on Racial Disparities.
Michigan worked with the federal government to make Ford Field a clinic to continue the state’s outreach initiatives towards racial equity with the vaccine, Gilchrist said on March 18.
“As a Detroiter, I felt this personally, having said goodbye to 27 people due to this virus,” he said at press conference inside the Detroit Lions stadium. “The virus hit our city hard.and today, right here at Ford Field, southeast Michigan becomes a symbol of hope.” ....

My uncle Juan Sanchez is battling COVID-19. The Gulf War veteran and former postal carrier is at home on a ventilator, struggling to stay out of the hospital. At 60-years-old, he s too young to be bed ridden at home. So far, my family has fought this fight seven times with six cousins and one aunt.  
With three vaccines and a fourth on the way, it doesn’t have to be this way.
But I’m afraid it will be this way for a long time to come. Even with the big family day event happening at the TCF Center on April 10 and mass vaccinations at Ford Field, too many people in my family, in my neighborhood, in my world of immigrants in Southwest Detroit will get sick.  ....
