A stunning radio play adaptation of the 50-year-old debut novel by Toni Morrison, “The Bluest Eye,” is epitomized in this painting. Protagonist Pecola Breedlove “is obsessed with Shirley Temple and a desire to have blue eyes,” according to the Aurora Theatre Company. The play explores “the emotional depths of Black girlhood, the poisonous effects of racism, and the heartbreak of shame.”

The month of March is typically dedicated to honoring mighty women and shining a light on the impactful ways they have brought change and contributed to the improvement of equal rights through the ages.
Women’s History Month is celebrated across the U.S. and around the world and corresponds with International Women’s Day (March 8). Bay Area organizations plan to recognize the celebration with a variety of virtual performances, activities and lectures aimed at highlighting women’s and girls’ power all month long. ....

California Shakespeare Theater plans to host an in-person season this summer at its Bruns Amphitheater in the Orinda hills, but with only one show produced by Cal Shakes itself, the company announced Tuesday, Feb. 2. The company is sharing its space with other arts organizations including Bandaloop, Destiny Arts Center and West Edge Opera at a time when audiences and arts workers will probably prefer gathering outside. ....
