Karissa Schweizer trains with Team USA ahead of Tokyo Olympics

A Des Moines Dowling Catholic graduate is packing her bags for Tokyo. Karissa Schweizer qualified for two events in the Tokyo Games, including the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs.Schweizer, who is training in Utah with Team USA ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, told KCCI in an exclusive interview that she’s faced an uphill battle. Despite minor injuries, training during a pandemic and traveling to Tokyo without family and friends, Schweizer said her Des Moines fan base always has her back. Even if I m in a different state, I ll always have someone be like I m from Iowa and I ve been following you for so long, ” she said. “So, I think that s really cool. And to be at the Olympics, doing my victory lap and seeing people that are just like we followed you from Iowa, it s just, like, really special. I m always proud to say I m from Iowa.”Schweitzer runs on Aug. 2 and 7. She is one of two Iowans to qualify for the Tokyo Summer Olympics so far. ....
