May 24, 2021 Derry Township School District Suspends Superintendent (Derry Twp., PA) Despite having just over a month left on his contract before retirement, Derry Township School District is suspending its superintendent. In a statement, the district says it made the decision after Superintendent Joe McFarland closed the high school at one point this year under the false impression it has hit a COVID-19 case threshold. The district adds that McFarland didn’t consult the board or its solicitor.

Many schools in Pennsylvania are preparing for federally-mandated standardized tests, despite the concerns of some educators and state lawmakers.Some say testing is an unnecessary burden this school year.Tasha Miller said her daughter hasn t stepped foot in a Harrisburg school in more than a year and will soon be taking standardized tests. If my daughter felt like she s not ready to take the tests, I can only imagine how other kids feel, she said.State lawmakers unsuccessfully petitioned the federal government to waive standardized testing requirements.Chris Lilienthal, with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, said many school districts moved the PSSA exams from April to May. He said many teachers are worried about losing time in the classroom for exams.
