Los Angeles Master Chorale Announces GALA 2021: SHINE BRIGHT


The Los Angeles Master Chorale, the country s preeminent professional choir, led by Grant Gershon, Kiki & David Gindler Artistic Director, will honor its singers and the philanthropic leadership of Laney Techentin at GALA 2021: SHINE BRIGHT, on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. PDT.
This special online experience, hosted by Broadway legend Patti LuPone, will feature performances by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, including a virtual surround sing, and the world premiere of Shine Bright, a triptych of videos featuring Reena Esmail s TaReKiTa, Meredith Monk s Earth Seen From Above from her landmark opera Atlas, and Derrick Spiva, Jr. s Ready, Bright (Los Angeles Master Chorale commission). TaReKiTa was released in November 2020, and Earth Seen from Above and Ready, Bright will premiere at GALA 2021. ....

Long Beach Opera names James Darrah artistic director

Long Beach Opera is expected to announce Monday that the company’s new artistic director and chief creative officer will be James Darrah, a Los Angeles director known for producing digital classical concerts and streaming operas during a near-year of COVID-19 closures.
The new contract begins immediately and will continue “until at least the end of 2024,” Executive Director and Chief Executive Jennifer Rivera said, making Darrah just the third artistic director in the company’s nearly 42-year history.
Darrah, 36, is scheduled to make his Long Beach Opera directorial debut this May with a production of Philip Glass’ “Les Enfants Terribles,” part of a diverse and imaginative season curated by Interim Artistic Director Yuval Sharon. Sharon’s interim position began after Artistic Director Andreas Mitisek departed in 2020. ....

The Struggle to Balance Speed and Equity in Vaccine Rollout
When the first doses came on line back in December, Governor Newsom promised to get people vaccinated with equity in mind. But that does not seem to be happening the vaccine rollout remains slow and reports are that people with more resources have been getting doses, even if they’re not supposed to be eligible yet. Now, the state is switching almost entirely to what’s supposed to be a simpler age-based eligibility system, prioritizing people 65 and older. It’s a group the Centers for Disease Control says is at a higher risk of hospitalization and death from the virus, but still the state is struggling to balance speed with equity.  ....
