Refreshing the Memory Wall: Public Art Commission's restoration of popular Trade Street artwork will be celebrated in early August | Arts

Two years after local officials and citizens began talks about restoring a popular public work of art in downtown Winston-Salem, the project is finished. A public unveiling and related events are set for the first week in August.
Winston-Salem s Memory Wall of Peace and Love
The “Memory Wall of Peace and Love” faces the sidewalk on the east side of Trade Street between Fourth and Fifth streets, adjoining an uncovered parking lot behind the Campbell Public Transportation Center. It was created in 1999 by Gregory Warmack (1948-2012), an internationally acclaimed, African American artist most often known as Mr. Imagination. He made the piece on commission for the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and the Winston-Salem Transit Authority. ....

Rap concert promoter sues Winston-Salem over canceled event.


A Kernersville music promoter is suing Winston-Salem for pulling the plug on a rap concert that was to take place July 31 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, after city officials said the show brought the potential for “violence and gang activity” during the concert.
Starr Entertainment LLC is suing Winston-Salem for breach of contract, claiming the promoter paid $189,000 in non-refundable deposits to secure artists for the event including Moneybagg Yo, Big Latto and Pooh Shiesty, among others.
The promoter wants the courts to issue a restraining order and an injunction that would force the city to allow the event to go on. ....
