As summer vacations near, health chief says no change to travel quarantine rules

Two days ahead of Israel’s scheduled lifting of the vast majority of coronavirus restrictions, Health Ministry Director-General Chezy Levy said Sunday that there were no plans to end quarantine requirements for travelers.
“We are not thinking about an easing [of restrictions] at Ben Gurion Airport. We will continue to test those returning to Israel and isolate them,” Levy told Army Radio. “This is the place where quarantine is important as undetected sickness can bring the infection back to Israel.”
The comments meant that families with young children could find it difficult to travel this summer, with unvaccinated returnees required to quarantine for at least 10 days. Israel is set to begin vaccinating teens aged 12-15 in the coming weeks. ....

Ministry virus experts say they weren't involved in decision to end restrictions

Members of the Health Ministry’s national forum for dealing with the coronavirus outbreak said Monday that no discussions had been held with experts ahead of Health Minister Yuli Edelstein’s announcement that almost all remaining virus restrictions will be lifted at the beginning of next month.
According to the Kan public broadcaster, one unnamed member of the forum expressed great surprise at the decision and raised questions as to the motives behind it.
Others told the outlet that they had only heard about the decision from news reports and suspected there were political motives behind the move. ....

Netherlands lifts lockdown measures


The Netherlands on Wednesday began relaxing its lockdown measures, despite infection rates and intensive care occupancy remaining relatively high.
The country is the latest in Europe to start easing restrictions following Italy, Greece and France, as they look to slowly edge away from lockdowns over the coming weeks.
Under the new rules, bars and cafes are allowed to reopen their outdoor terraces for the first time in half a year

Terraces are only allowed to open between midday and 6PM for a maximum of two socially distanced people per table, unless they re from the same household. ....

Deputy Health Minister Yoav Kisch predicted Wednesday that within a few weeks Israel will lift nearly all its restrictions on public life that were introduced to combat the coronavirus pandemic, as infection rates have slid so low the measures will no longer be needed.
“As morbidity continues to decline, we can reach a situation where, in my estimation, in three weeks’ time, the State of Israel will be almost without restrictions and that is an amazing achievement,” Kisch said in the Knesset plenum during a discussion about the virus outbreak. ....
