Man wanted for sexually assaulting child in Central NY found, arrested in Oklahoma

Rome, N.Y. A man wanted for the decade-long sexual abuse of a child in Central New York was returned to the state last weekend after being arrested halfway across the country.
Richard J. Meier, 35, of Rome, has been charged with sexually assaulting a girl repeatedly over the course of 10 years, said Chief Deputy Derrick O’Meara, of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. The abuse started when the girl was 5 years old, he said.
The sheriff’s office started investigating Meier in December after the girl he abused who is now 15 years old disclosed that the man had abused her, said O’Meara, director of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center. After a months-long investigation by Investigator Mark R. Chrysler, Meier was indicted by an Oneida County grand jury on April 30 for predatory sexual assault against a child.
Oneida County CAC Marks Child Abuse Awareness Month
Blue pinwheels were placed on the grounds of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center today to mark Child Abuse Awareness Month.
Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Derrick O’Meara says every adult needs to play a role in protecting children every month.
The Oneida County Child Advocacy Center served 869 children last year.
Since January 1, the CAC has 304 reports of child sexual abuse.
The Oneida County Child Advocacy Center is comprised of members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Rome Police, Utica Police, and the New York State Police, as well as victim advocates from the YWCA, victim counselors from Center for Family Life and and Recovery, and the Neighborhood Center.

A WWII veteran has his own day in Oneida County. Tec 5 Terry Larkin, of Forestport turned 100 years-old. To honor the special occasion, Wednesday, March 11 was declared Terry Larkin Day in Oneida County.

Oneida County Sheriff Rob Maciol presented Larkin with the credentials making him an Honorary Member of the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office was honored to participate in the celebration of Terry Larkin’s 100th birthday, the Sheriff s department wrote on Facebook.
