NZ mental health advocate coming to New Plymouth to 'give back' to Taranaki Retreat

Mokaraka is known as the man who tried to commit “suicide by cop”.
In 2009, he was at breaking point and wanted to die like Steven Wallace had in Waitara – he wanted to be, and was, shot by police.
“I’m supposed to be dead,” Mokaraka said.

It took him seven years to mentally and emotionally heal, and bring together the “empowering” show he now performs all over Australasia.
“I’m being the hero my younger self needed,” the Whangārei-based man said. “It’s funny, dark, real and educational – coming from someone with lived experience.” ....
