Officials break ground on Burlington Depot project

(Photo: Officials break ground on new Depot Project) Burlington, IA- Burlington city officials, Amtrak Representatives, and others gathered at the Burlington Depot Thursday, August 25th, for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating an $11.5 million investment into improvements to the building. Improvements to the station will include new boarding platforms with rehabilitated canopies and structure, new station signage, mobile lift enclosures, energy efficient LED lighting, and guardrails. Also, new accessible pathways will provide improved connections from the existing station building to the platform and the various access points on the site. Amtrak Director of Government Affairs Derrick James said that these improvements will improve their ridership in the Burlington area. Fort Madison named All-Star Community

Fort Madison, IA- The City of Fort Madison has been named a 2022 All-Star community by the Iowa League of Cities. The city received the distinction for its Historic Santa Fe Depot Renovation. The city will be recognized at an Awards Banquet at the League's Annual Conference & Exhibit, held in Waterloo from September 28-30. The All-Star Community Award is the most prestigious honor given by the League to cities. Entries are judged by a panel of former city officials and others familiar with municipal government. Judges determine winners based on innovative efforts in areas such as urban renewal, development, preservation, collaborative efforts or quality of life improvements. Fort Madison was among three of Iowa's 940 cities to garner such recognition. The Depot Project was up against projects from other communities with a population of 10,000 and over. ....
