Community rallies to preserve historic Black hospital | Richmond Free Press | Serving the African American Community in Richmond, VA

Richmonders will rally for an important symbol of the city’s Black history Sunday afternoon at the former Richmond Community Hospital on Overbrook Road. Virginia Union University, a historically Black university which owns the former hospital, plans to demolish the historic building and replace it with housing.

Statue of Prince Edward County civil rights activist to find home in U.S. Capitol, pending state approval

The Commission for Historical Statues has approved a full-scale clay model of Barbara Johns, a civil rights activist at a segregated high school in Prince Edward County. Pending approval by the state, the statue will later be cast in bronze and be moved into the U.S. Capitol.
