Earlier this week, Colorado Governor Jared Polis predicted that the state could hand over decisions about the COVID-19 response to local government agencies and officials as soon as April 16. As a result, some jurisdictions may immediately end mask mandates, capacity limits and other safety procedures that have been required for much of the past year. But during an April 1 press conference, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said the Mile High City won t immediately ditch such policies, particularly given statistics related to the novel coronavirus that remain worrisome. And while rules about mask use outdoors might be eased within weeks, that won t be the case when there s a roof overhead. ....
During a February 9 press conference, Governor Jared Polis politely but firmly rejected Denver s request to prioritize members of its homeless population for vaccination against COVID-19. But Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, speaking at his own press conference today, February 11, refused to take no for an answer. Instead, he continued to stress the need for getting members of the city s unhoused population inoculated as soon as possible, and revealed that if the federal government agrees to directly ship medication to cities, as he hopes, he ll devote some of the supply to that purpose. Hancock also countered Polis s assertion that more people will die if homeless individuals younger than 65 are pushed ahead of seniors in the vaccination line by suggesting that his efforts would prevent different kinds of fatalities. ....
Denver has been given the okay to take part in Colorado s 5 Star State Certification Program, Mayor Michael Hancock announced during a January 14 press conference about the city s COVID-19 response. Being certified for the program allows qualifying restaurants and businesses to operate at Level Yellow capacity levels; they re currently stuck at Level Orange. However, Hancock and other officials say that pre-certification can t begin quite yet because the city needs to set up the proper infrastructure, and in any event, the restrictions will remain where they are until Denver achieves Level Orange case counts for a week. And right now, the number of infections is actually growing again following the recent holidays. ....
