Candidate Donald Trumps republican national convention acceptance speech. I want to show that for our viewers, and then we will talk about it. I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people who cannot defend themselves. [cheers and applause] nobody knows the system better than me. Which is why i alone can fix it. [cheers] i will have both of you respond to it. Carol, go first. What about him saying that led you to title the book this way . It was a really interesting challenge to summarize 2020, what a consequential painful lethal frightening year, but when we looked back over the many ways in which Donald Trump governed in that year, it was striking to us that he professed at the very beginning that he was such a great governor, essentially, that he would be such a leader, defender, and that he could fix everything because he knew best. You know, phil and i in our reporting, you know, we always try to sort of put President Trumps former Presiden

The vaccine is im credibly effective. More than 99. 99 of people fully vaccinated will survive a breakthrough infection. But with tens of millions of people still unvaccinated, new cases, deaths and hospitalizations are also on the rise. Cases have gone up about fourfold in the last couple weeks. Were pushing up toward 100,000 cases a day now. And particularly so in those hot spots where Vaccination Rates are still quite low, maybe 30 . That would be missouri and arkansas, louisiana, florida. And those are areas of deep concern. You just heard an area of deep concern. An epicenter of the new covid surge, florida. That state now accounting for one of every five new infections in the u. S. Cnns Randi Kaye joins me from florida. How are officials responding to the dramatic spike . Secretary mcaleenan good morning, and thank you for joining us to discuss the important action the ministration is going to combat thisrisis at our border, year, we have seen and precedented flow of family units from Central America coming to our southwest corner. During the first 10 months, customs and Border Protection apprehended 470 5000 families. 90 crossed the border unlawfully. Three times more than any previous full year of record. Sawhe month of may we 88,630 family members arrive at the border, four times the record amounts. As i have testified multiple times and has experts and leaders have explained, the driving factor is our Legal Framework for immigration. Human smugglers advertise and migrants know well that even if theyve crossed the border illegally, arriving with a child means that they will be released into the United States to wait for Court Proceedings. Frameworkap in our comes from our 2015 reimport reinterpretation of the florida Settlement Agreement, in agreemen

this, as with other aspects of this nightmarish problem the u.s. needs to lead its partners in the region and internationally in stepping up the effort so it s closer to the level of the problem. we have again, we have declaratory policies about humanitarian issues but there s no follow-through. people make pledges they never deliver. i ve looked at camps in kurdistan. i remember seeing the sea of tents last year in northern jordan where syrians have come. i ve seen the camps in turkey. and, you know, if you really want to think about the nightmare, think about all those young men in those camps. very little jobs, money, but radical preachers. people talking to them about settling scores and it s a formula for not just another four, eight years of trouble but a generation of nightmarish problems. we saw what happened when the palestinians were dispersed and went into camp and had radicals banging them every day about the struggle. and i think it s i fear it s already too

anybody to hire veterans. the rate of unemployment for veterans has been higher. i had the chance in rhodesville, michigan, to meet with veterans vietnam veterans some months ago. and i was deeply troubled by the high rate of unemployment for those vietnam veterans. this country has not done an adequate job in terms of making sure that veterans have a real opportunity to work. that is the tribute that we must provide it s more than a tribute it s an obligation to those who have served this nation. that s why this is called the heroes act. let s not distort it. let s not let s not undermine what is the purpose of this legislation. those who have served deserve as our priority any reasonable effort to provide them with the opportunity that they want. they have served, now they want to work. we need to make sure they have that opportunity to work. it s within that spirit that i support this legislation and urge its passage and i yield back the balance of our time. the speaker
