Five key issues for St Helens Council in 2021

Balancing the budget
By far the biggest challenge for St Helens Borough Council in 2020 will be to close a projected £20.4 million funding gap so it can deliver a balanced budget.
Senior Labour politicians have been working on budget proposals – described by council leader David Baines as “drastic” – for several months now.
The council had originally been developing an emergency budget in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw all of its services come under review.
This work has carried into next year, partly due to emergency measures taken at the start of the pandemic and additional government funding.
Cllr Baines warned in November that libraries, leisure services, children’s centres, waste services and highways maintenance are all under threat. ....

Children s services were rated inadequate by Ofsted in September 2019
CONCERNS have once again been raised about the improvements within children’s services in St Helens, with one councillor describing the latest quarterly performance report as the worst he has ever seen.
St Helens Borough Council’s children’s services were rated inadequate by Ofsted in September 2019, which came after a focused visit in the summer of 2018 that highlighted deep failings within the department.
Following the inadequate rating, social services were placed in intervention measures by the Department for Education (DfE).
A recent remote visit carried out by the watchdog in August found that the overall picture was improving, although concerns were raised by councillors last month over the pace of change. ....
