22 April 2021 9:05 GMT Updated  22 April 2021 9:10 GMT German industrial conglomerate Thyssenkrupp has won a contract to deliver a 20MW green hydrogen electrolyser for the production of green ammonia to CF Industries’ Donaldsonville manufacturing complex in the US State of Louisiana. The unit will use renewable power from the grid to produce green hydrogen which then will be converted to 20,000 tons per year of green ammonia at CF Industries existing ammonia plants at the site, and thereby start to decarbonise what today is the world’s largest ammonia production facility. Green ammonia can be used as storage and transport fuel for renewable energy, or as direct clean fuel, for example in maritime transportation. Start of production at Donaldsonville is expected in 2023. Thyssenkrupp previously had already delivered an ammonia plant not linked to renewables for the Louisiana site.
