Archbishop gives music conservatory students personal tour of cathedral

It’s likely that the more than three dozen students given a private tour of St. Mary’s Cathedral by Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone on May 24 left with a deeper appreciation of the cathedral celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
“Is that wood or metal?” a student of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music could be heard asking a classmate as they walked under the massive, mixed-media window that defines the entrance of the cathedral, the third in the city’s history and the first built after the Second Vatican Council.
The window, the archbishop said before the group entered the cathedral for the morning tour, is a visual expression of the “universal call to holiness for every person in whatever role they choose in life. It is one of the main tenets of Vatican II.  ....

Archbishop publishes pastoral letter on abortion

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone today published his first pastoral letter, “Before I Formed You in the Womb I Knew You: A Pastoral Letter on the Human Dignity of the Unborn, Holy Communion and Catholics in Public Life.”

Parish honors Black History Month with church display

The framed faces of Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Cardinal Wilton Gregory, John Lewis, Barack Obama, Rosa Parks and Mahalia Jackson and other notable Americans of African American descent are the first thing Most Holy Redeemer parishioners will see when they arrive for Mass this month.
The regal display honoring Black culture during Black History Month Feb. 1-March 1, was an “intentional teaching tool” in a parish with less than a half-dozen Black members, said Mercy Sister Marilyn Morgan.
“Our parish has often been introspective, and we wanted to focus outside of ourselves on racism,” said Sister Morgan, who designed the display. ....
