PLYMOUTH – Local Vietnam veterans participated in last weekend’s dedication of the Vietnam Memorial in Fall River. A group from Plymouth and surrounding towns traveled to the unveiling of the Vietnam Memorial Wall with a replica of a helicopter that was widely used during the war and an icon of the conflict. Local veterans built the helicopter to honor Vietnam veterans for a local parade several years ago and now are frequently invited to travel with it to attend Vietnam War memorials and events. Denis Russell, commander of VFW Post 1822, said last weekend’s dedication was especially moving as it unveiled an 80 percent scale model of the Vietnam Memorial Wall built in Washington , D.C., in 1982. ....
Wicked Local PLYMOUTH – Local veterans honored Mayflower II’s World War II roots last week as Plimoth Patuxet Museums (formerly Plimoth Plantation) opened for the new season. Veterans who donated service medals and memorabilia to the ship’s new bronze bell took turns ringing it Saturday morning aboard the replica of the ship that carried the Pilgrims from England in 1620. “There is a common bond between veterans and the Pilgrims in that the men and women of our military take an oath and do not know where they will serve or what dangers they may face in the name of freedom,” Denis Russell, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1822, said before giving the bell a clang. ....
