Council bosses have launched an investigation after a bin lorry burst into flames.
Its crew, who were collecting rubbish in Perth city centre, escaped unhurt and looked on as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service put out the flames which engulfed their vehicle on Wednesday morning.
The lorry had been parked up on the cobbles between St John’s Kirk and Perth City Hall when the blaze broke out and the workers were able to stand clear until firefighters arrived. ....

Sir, – Regarding Denis Munro’s claim the SNP has achieved little in government (Letters, December 15).
Since 2007, the SNP has enacted groundbreaking policies. The Baby Box gives every wee one a good start in life, and will help reduce infant mortality. Free tuition widens access to education and provides a route out of poverty.
Free personal care for all who need it helps our vulnerable people.
The SNP delivered the Queensferry Crossing on time and under budget.
In February the SNP will introduce the Scottish Child Payment of £10 per child per week – a game changer in tackling child poverty. Unlike Universal Credit, it will not contain an abhorrent Rape Clause. ....

Sir, – Since the nationalisation of Prestwick in 2013 the Scottish Government has spent millions on an airport with no flights and, last year, the purchase of a shipyard with no orders – except for those that drove it to bankruptcy.
According to a parliamentary committee, Nicola Sturgeon’s government oversaw a “catastrophic failure” in the building of two new ferries and should be investigated by Audit Scotland.
The cost of constructing these has risen from £97 million to £200 and the final cost could be £296m.
According to the Sunday Times, “Scotland’s industrial white elephants of Prestwick Airport, Ferguson Marine and BiFab have soaked up about £400 million without producing a profit. ....
